Wellburtin (a brand name)
and its generic form of bupropion (the actual chemical substance
involved in the drug) is not primarily a stop smoking product. That
having been said however, bupropion has a number of interesting
aspects to it that can allow it to be used as a stop smoking aid
should you need one in your fight against the addiction that cigarettes
have been known to foment.
The main reason for this
is that bupropion is primarily used as an antidepressant. When people
are depressed about something, there is a chemical reaction that
is going on in their brain that inhibits the release of important
chemicals like dopamine. The absence of dopamine within the brain
is what causes the negative emotions to run wild and that is primarily
where the term depression comes from. That having been said however,
bupropion has the ability to combat the inhibition of dopamine and
a similar side effect substance known as norepinephrine. With these
two substances released, depression is eventually defeated.
Why is this important for
the battle against smoking? The reason that it is important for
that battle is that this same process can be used to combat smoking
addiction because it can fight withdrawal symptoms in the same way
that it can fight depression. In addition, this mechanism also has
a way of preventing nicotine from binding to sites on the brain
and for that reason also fights the addiction that people feel when
they start smoking each day.
